  • Wool Allergies & Clean Air

Wool Allergies & Clean Air What is ‘fine dust’ & should I be worried about my allergies? Fine dust is a serious problem for people who suffer from respiratory issues and allergies. Fine dust, like that from incinerators or soot from diesel vehicles, are tiny particles, less than 10 microns in diameter, that can become airborne and become a cause of concern. Irrespective of the kind of dust inhaled, these particles cause irritation when they enter the respiratory tract and can result in respiratory issues or can cause your allergies to flare up (such as asthma). Where the bronchial system has previously incurred damage, the irritation effect will be much greater. How does this affect my choice of flooring finish? The current misconception is that because carpet collects more dust particles, it results in a greater chance of respiratory issues/allergies. This is not the case! In reality, on a smooth flooring material (such as wood floors, vinyl, etc): When you move about or open a door, the dust gathered on the surface is stirred up and becomes airborne, aggravating allergies (entering the ‘breathing zone’) However, on a wool carpeted area dust becomes ‘trapped in the carpet due to its three-dimensional structure (and is kept out of the ‘breathing zone’) - until it is vacuumed. What about vacuuming? It should be noted that vacuuming increases the amount of house dust mite allergen in the air for up to 20 minutes - this is relevant for carpet or smooth flooring surfaces. Conclusion It can therefore be concluded that the implementation of carpet in an indoor space will result in a lower frequency of airborne dust particles & thus a lower chance of induced respiratory issues This can be further evidenced in a major international survey conducted during 2002 where over 19,000 people in 18 countries showed categorically that those who have carpet in their home, especially in the bedroom, have fewer instances of asthma (the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology 110(2): 285-292 (2002). • ITC Cleaning & Maintenance

ITC CLEANING & MAINTENANCE FAUX SILK & NYLON CARPETS VACUUMING To maintain the appearance of your carpet, it is recommended to vacuum regularly. As every household is different, the frequency of vacuuming should be based on how many people live in your home. For example, for four people living in the house = vacuuming a minimum of four times per week, especially in high traffic areas, using a good quality upright vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush is recommended. Fibre shedding is a normal characteristic of new carpets, which reduces after time. Vacuuming regularly and thoroughly will prevent soil and dirt from becoming embedded in the fibres. It will also help prevent premature wear. PERIODIC CLEANING Over a period, even with rigorous and regular vacuuming, your carpet may well have an accumulation of debris, deep in the pile that requires a thorough clean. We would always recommend the services of a professional cleaning company to undertake the shampooing or steam cleaning work for you. PLEASE BE AWARE OF Whilst our nylon carpets are thoroughly tested, site conditions must prevail on any installation. Different on-site conditions such as areas where there is a risk of food and beverages being spilt must be taken into consideration. Hot beverages such as tea, coffee, soup and chocolate will cause staining which will be more prominent on light plain colours. It is still important, as with other fibres, to ensure stains, however, caused, are dealt with as quickly as possible and the carpet is vacuumed regularly. POLYESTER CARPETS VACUUMING To maintain the appearance of your carpet, it is recommended to vacuum regularly. AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT Although Polyester is a natural fade resistant fibre, exposure to strong sunlight will eventually cause fading. MOVE FURNITURE AROUND Use gliders or cups underneath the furniture to move a few directions to prevent permanent indentations from forming. CLEANING Clean any spillages and stains immediately Test any proprietary cleaning product in an inconspicuous spot before using on a large area. All carpet cleaning solutions have instructions. Please follow their instructions carefully. Alternatively, a simple method using 1 x cup of white vinegar mixed thoroughly with 1 x cup of cool water can be used. i) Spray the vinegar/water mix onto the stain. ii) Sprinkle baking soda on the spot and allow to settle. iii) With a clean cloth, blot the spot. iv) Vacuum and allow to dry. *For further information please refer to the downloadable PDF at the bottom of the page. • Ege Cleaning & Maintenance

EGE CARPETS CLEANING & MAINTENANCE CLEANING & MAINTENANCE Correct and regular maintenance is necessary to extend the lifetime of your new ege carpet, maintain its appearance and ensure a healthy indoor climate. We strongly recommend that the carpet's ongoing maintenance and cleaning are undertaken by a professional service partner that uses maintenance equipment and methods which are tested and approved by the Carpet and Rug Institute with a "Seal of Approval". Defective or incorrect maintenance and cleaning can lead to a number of problems, such as: Poor cleaning quality– discolouration – long drying times– odour – rapid soiling – chemical residue in the carpet – poor indoor climate – delamination of the carpet's backing – bulges – shrinkage, etc. DAILY CLEANING - REGULAR VACUUMING Day-to-day cleaning - vacuuming Vacuuming is one of the most important elements of an effective and economic maintenance programme. Daily vacuuming can remove more than 80% of all dry soiling from the carpet. Carpet vacuuming should be planned according to the amount of soiling that may potentially accumulate in the area in question. Day-to-day maintenance - stain removal Spillage stains can be removed if immediate action is taken. As soon as the spillage takes place, the spilled liquid should be mopped up with a white cloth. Keep doing this until all of the spilled liquid has been completely absorbed. We recommend professional cleaning agents to clean stains. If other cleaning agents are used, the instructions provided should be followed, and the necessary precautions taken. Light suction machines may be used when more effective treatment is needed. These machines can be used to rinse off and suck up spillages. It is important to follow the manufacturer's guidelines in order to comply with current guarantees. DAILY MAINTENANCE - STAIN REMOVAL Spillage stains can be removed if immediate action is taken. STAIN GUIDE - FIRST AID 1. REMOVE ANY LOOSE DIRT If the stains are new, first remove any loose particles and then wipe up spills with a dry, white cloth or non-dyed absorbent paper. It is important not to rub the stain. Instead, the stain should be blotted off. Dried or concentrated stains should be treated with a brush and a vacuum cleaner. 2. DISSOLVE IN LUKEWARM WATER The next step is to apply lukewarm water (without soap, washing powder, liquid detergent or any similar agents). Dab the area gently with a damp cloth and then absorb as much of the liquid as possible by blotting with a dry, white cloth. Then drizzle potato starch on the stain and leave to dry for 24 hours before vacuuming. 3. CARPET STAIN REMOVER If the stain cannot be dissolved in water, your next step is to try a universal stain-removing agent. See the instructions for use on the product's packaging for further guidelines. 4. SPECIAL AGENTS If none of the preceding three "first-aid" steps works, the stain must be treated using a special stain-removing agent. In general, the use and dosage instructions must be followed closely, and treatment should not take place on moist areas. Instead, the area should be left to dry before the special agent is applied to the stain. If the treatment leaves a mark, this may indicate that the carpet is generally soiled and needs to be cleaned. If the stain re-appears after treatment, this is usually because there is still some stain-removing agent or stain residue left in the carpet. In this case, the area should be treated again according to the guidelines described in step 3. The first time a new cleaning agent or stain remover is used on the carpet, you should check whether the agent may damage the carpet. Damage may occur as a result of colour bleed, discolouration, bleaching or dissolution. It is therefore recommended to test both cleaning agent and stain remover on an area the size of a postage stamp. This might be in a corner, under a radiator or in a similar area. The test should be made according to the prescribed dosages and action times. IMPORTANT Always work from the edge of the stain towards the centre. To prevent the cleaned area from quickly becoming soiled again after treatment, it is important to rinse off and blot up the remaining stain-removing agent. To remove stains from larger areas, an extraction machine should be used. The faster you take action to remove a stain, the greater the chances of successfully removing the stain. Note that certain types of stains are very difficult to remove, and that such stains will often be more visible on a light, plain-coloured carpet than on a similar darker, patterned carpet. AFTER CLEANING After cleaning, check the carpet for stains and remaining soiling that cleaning did not remove. If there are stains or remaining soiling, this must be treated. After cleaning it is recommended not to walk on the carpet until it is completely dry. The carpet should also be dry before moving furniture back because chair legs, etc. may leave marks on the wet carpet. Remember to register the cleaning performed, at the back of this Service and Maintenance Guide. *For further information please refer to the downloadable PDF at the bottom of the page. • BZN Cleaning & Maintenance

BZN CLEANING & MAINTENANCE WOOL WOOL - SAVANNA & BIZON RANGES These ranges are very easily maintained with regular cleaning, which is not only important from an aesthetic and hygienic point of view but also contributes towards preserving the value of the carpet. Daily removal of the loose and slightly adhesive dirt by vacuuming eliminates the effects of accelerated wear resulting from the soil being embedded into the carpet fibre by regular traffic. Dry vacuuming should be carried out in the direction of the weave. In addition to regular cleaning with a vacuum, spills and stains can be overcome with minimum care and if simple procedures are followed – see table below. It is recommended that a planned maintenance program include a cleaning system such as “Host” low moisture extraction (available worldwide) – where the carpet is sprayed with a cleaning agent and subsequently rinsed using moist cleaning pads and only a small amount of water - most professional carpet cleaners should be aware of this cleaning method. This will ensure maximum appearance retention and performance of the carpet. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING POINTS: The use of inappropriate chemicals may cause permanent damage to the carpet. Be cautious about using off-the-shelf carpet cleaning detergents. Do not use shampoos and cleaners with a spirit base. PH neutral non-film forming cleaning agents should be used. Make sure the cleaning agent is completely removed from the fibres to avoid discoloration. Before cleaning, make sure the carpet is properly glued down to avoid damage. Never rub the carpet when spot cleaning. Solutions should be blotted up or dabbed gently with a colour-fast towel. Act quickly – the longer the stain remains unattended the harder it will be to remove. DAILY CLEANING - REGULAR VACUUMING Regular vacuuming of the whole carpet should take place even when the carpet does not look particularly dirty. Areas where heavy foot traffic is directed through such as doorways, entrances and at the edges of the carpet where it joins hard floors require special attention. Proper vacuuming requires 3 to 5 passes at slow speed over the same area. INTERIM CLEANING METHODS ABSORBENT POWDERS: in this system, the absorbent powder cleaning compound is sprinkled evenly over the surface of the carpet and brushed in using a counter-rotating brush. After about 20 minutes the dry compound is vacuumed away using a powerful vacuum cleaner. This system works very well on greasy stains and, being a dry compound, it is safe to use on all types of carpet and tile installations. We do not recommend this system for use in areas prone to wet spillages. SPILLAGES & STAINS WET SPILLAGES: should be mopped up immediately. Most spillages respond well to immediate treatment, thereby preventing permanent staining. Please follow RC & D Stain Checklist and Treatment Guide for further information. Please do not walk on the carpet until it is completely dry. HIGH FOAM SHAMPOOS: the high foaming shampoo is brushed over the pile surface using a special applicator with brushing action. The carpet is left to dry thoroughly, and the dry shampoo crystals are vacuumed away. RC & D prefer the use of a machine applicator with counter-rotating brushes to lift the pile. Flat rotating bonnet mop or brush applicators can untwist, mat, and flatten the pile of the carpet and we do not recommend their use. PROFESSIONAL CLEANING HOT WATER EXTRACTION SYSTEMS: In this system, the carpet pile is sprayed with a shampoo solution, which is lightly agitated with a grooming brush for an appropriate time, next the surface is passed over several times with a cleaning tool to thoroughly rinse out the pre-conditioner and soils, using an acetic acid solution, lower the Ph of the fabric to a neutral state. Finally, the surface is dried sufficiently to avoid any possibility of saturation. BARRIER MATTING: where fitted, should be vacuumed daily and cleaned out regularly in order to prevent build-up and transfer of soil or greasy substances to the carpet. For cleaning and maintenance of barrier matter, please contact the manufacturer of the particular product. *For further information please refer to the downloadable PDF at the bottom of the page.
